Two international giants simultaneously increase mining intelligence

Jul 28, 2026

Entering July, the global mining equipment market has witnessed two major industry moves: Caterpillar has completed the acquisition of Skycatch, a mining spatial data collection and processing technology company, to supplement the underlying digital capabilities of mines; Hitachi Construction Machinery has signed a strategic cooperation memorandum with autonomous driving technology manufacturer Pronto to to jointly create an open open-pit mine automation complete solution.

The two leading manufacturers merged and chose completely different expansion paths, but ultimately anchored in the same track - deepening the digitization and automation of mining full chain services. This also marks the competitive logic of the global mining equipment industry, which has already moved beyond the competition of single hardware devices and fully turned to the comprehensive competition of intelligent systems, digital ecology, and integrated solutions.

Caterpillar has established a closed-loop full process mining intelligent system by acquiring digital technologies such as continuous consolidation of spatial surveying, mining planning software, and intelligent fleet management; Komatsu and Hitachi Construction Machinery have successively chosen to collaborate with third-party autonomous driving companies such as Pronto, relying on an open cooperation model to cover the intelligent transformation needs of existing mines and small and medium-sized quarries.

Different manufacturers, based on their own technological reserves and market positioning, have taken two differentiated paths: acquisition and research, and open alliances. However, their long-term goals are highly consistent: to break away from the traditional business model of simply selling equipment and provide mining customers with a complete technical service package covering data collection, whole mine operation scheduling, and unmanned mining. This also sends a clear signal to the entire industry: the core competitiveness in the future mining equipment field is no longer limited to equipment performance. System integration, digital technology, and ecological collaboration capabilities are the key to widening the gap for top manufacturers.
